Chintaro Chihuahua's

What is a Registered Breeder?

I am a West Australian based "Registered Breeder" & Exhibitor" of "Long & Smooth Coat Chihuahuas".  What does this actually mean?  I have actually had alot of questions about this during phone calls and emails when people are enquiring for a puppy, so let me elaborate.

I was a member of Dogs West and owned a bitch on "main papers" for 12 months prior to applying for registered breeder status.  I then passed an exam issued by my States governing body which included genetics, anatomy, nutrition, health and wellbeing, ethics, breeding, first aid, hereditory diseases and much more.  I achieved a score of 90% or over, which you need to pass, and then I applied for a prefix which was granted after considerable weeks had gone by.

I am now acknowledged by the Australian National Kennel Association (ANKC) which is the administrative governing body of all pure bred dogs Australia wide.

Most importantly I follow a code of ethics as well as rules & regulations set out by both my local body "Dogs West" as well as the "ANKC".

Why did I go through all the above with considerable learning, time and money spent?  Its because I genuinely want to do the right thing by my breed!  If you really like something, why wouldnt you do the research?

Why is this so important?

Puppy Farming/Backyard Breeding has become a huge problem Australia wide and we are now seeing all these so called "Designer Dogs" with all the health defects combined when crossing two entirely different breeds!  These so called puppy breeders are basically playing Frankenstien, and I am sure you all know what happened there!

We all need to take steps to make sure that all dogs are being bred and raised in a clean, nuturing, safe and healthy environment, so please do your research and buy a pure bred dog!

Ask the questions....

Where has your puppy come from?

Will the sellers allow you in their home to see the puppy and its parents?

Are the people selling him/her registered breeders with their states governing body?

Have you checked their membership numbers?

Are you being given papers?

If any of the answers is a "no" I would advise you to look elsewhere!

My status as a registered breeder is NOT about giving my details to some board or club (paying a small fee to become a pet breeder) and then being issued a number that you can find all over the local "to sell, trade or buy" papers!   These so called "members" are not accountable to any governing body and there is no way to check if they are breeding ethically or healthily.

I advise all new prospective puppy owners to just make a quick call to whatever state they are in, to check the number that is given or displayed for any advertisement, and if it doesnt match up - run away as quick as you can.
